Effective Periodontal Treatments

At-Home Care
In the earliest stages of gum disease, you may be able to reverse the condition on your own with a strict oral care routine. Be sure to brush at least twice a day, floss once a day, and use mouthwash to keep bacteria to a minimum. Attend your routine dental checkups so a hygienist can remove plaque buildup from the spaces you can’t reach.

Scaling and Root Planing
Also known as a deep cleaning, this procedure uses specialized dental tools to remove plaque and bacteria from above and below the gumline. Once this buildup is removed, your gums can reattach to your teeth, holding them securely in place.

LANAP
In the past, patients relied on periodontal surgery to treat advanced gum disease, but this procedure was painful and also removed healthy gum tissue. We use LANAP laser therapy, a protocol that only removes diseased tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact. LANAP with the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser can clear your periodontal pockets of bacteria and aid in the reattachment of gum tissue to your teeth. Treatment is minimally invasive and virtually painless. Recovery is also fairly quick.
Implants for a More Complete Smile
If you want to fill the gaps in your smile, you could benefit from a meeting with our board-certified implantologist who completed advanced training at the prestigious Misch Implant Institute and is a diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology. Dr. Nicholas Sager can place dental implants and implant-supported restorations like crowns, bridges, and dentures to address any degree of tooth loss.
If you struggle with gum disease, you can explore restorative options like implants once you’ve put a plan in place to maintain your oral health and keep gum disease at bay. Your restorative treatments can ultimately improve the functionality of your teeth and the appearance of your smile.
FAQ About Periodontics
What are the stages of gum disease?
Gum disease starts as gingivitis, a condition in which the gums may appear red and swollen, but you may not experience any pain. Patients often don’t realize they have an infection at this stage. When left untreated, gingivitis progresses to a more advanced form of the condition, called periodontitis. This is when bacteria starts to destroy the soft tissues and bone that support your teeth, causing pain and eventually tooth loss.
Shouldn’t I see a periodontist for my care?
Many patients can visit our general dentists for periodontics in Waco, TX. While a periodontist is a dentist who has received specialized training in the gums and jawbone, a general dentist is often enough to address gum disease. Our team has invested in advanced technology and completed training in implantology to provide you with everything you need.
What if I don’t treat my gum disease?
When left untreated, gum disease can progress into a serious condition that threatens your overall health. In addition to tooth loss, gum disease can cause cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and more. Treatment is much easier if you seek help for your gum disease before it progresses.
What are the risk factors for gum disease?
There are a variety of factors that can increase your risk of gum disease, such as smoking, using tobacco, diabetes, high stress levels, aging, genetics, certain health conditions, and taking medications that reduce saliva flow. Attend routine checkups if you have any of these risk factors.
